Sunlight is like fuel for pepper plants. Select a sunny spot in your garden that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. Ample exposure to sunlight will promote robust growth and abundant fruiting.
Consistent, adequate watering is essential for healthy pepper plants. Water deeply, providing about an inch of water per week, ensuring the soil remains moist but not soggy. Avoid overhead watering to prevent disease.
Mulching for moisture and weed control:
Mulching around pepper plants conserves soil moisture, suppresses weeds, and regulates soil temperature. Apply organic mulch, such as straw or wood chips, around the base of the plant, leaving a small gap to prevent stem rot.
Spacing for optimal growth:
Give your pepper plants plenty of room to thrive. Plant them at least 18 to 24 inches apart to promote proper airflow, reduce the risk of disease, and ensure each plant receives sufficient nutrients.
Feed regularly:
Pepper plants are great excretors and benefit from consistent fertilization. Use a balanced organic fertilizer or incorporate compost into the soil before planting. Side-dress with compost or slow-release fertilizers throughout the growing season.
